AUDE FLYER

Salut

I don't believe it!

I am sure you don't either, another Flyer and on the day projected, and it seems hopefully sent much more simply, giving more time for editing and improving it. Lets hope you receive it!!! And I don't receive 200 mails as a result of it going out. Apologies to those who submitted items that haven't gone in this edition, there was a large response from the last one and I have had an amount of work to do to prepare the database for this new smooth sending method.

And whilst I am in the presence of Mr Meldrew I agree totally with Mr Pantsman (sorry Paxman) Paxman raises smalls problem with M&S

Jeremy Paxman, the Newsnight anchor famous for grilling cabinet ministers and airing his robust opinions on subjects as diverse as the future of broadcasting and the latest entries in Who's Who, has now voiced his dissatisfaction on another matter of importance to the nation: Marks & Spencer underpants.

The broadcaster is so concerned about the declining standards of men's underwear that he has written to Sir Stuart Rose, the chief executive of M&S, detailing his "anxiety" about its gussets, which he said no longer offered "adequate support".

"Like very large numbers of men in this country, I have always bought my socks and pants at Marks & Sparks," he wrote. "I've noticed that something very troubling has happened. There's no other way to put this. Their pants no longer provide adequate support. When I've discussed this with friends and acquaintances it has revealed widespread gusset anxiety. I do feel that someone should take up this mighty battle.

"The other thing is socks. Even among those of us who clip our toenails rigorously, they appear to be wearing out much more quickly on the big toe. Also, they're no longer ribbed around the top, which means they do not stay up in the way that they used to.

I agree, Steve- the grumpy Aude man

Next flyers will be sent on February 8th and 29th please forward any submissions 3 days before these dates

Please note you can now mail submissions etc to mail@audeflyer.com and this is the address you should give to people who are interested to receive the flyer.

All past editions are posted http://audeflyer.com/

  In the Garden

Apparently Roman soldiers would tie bunches of fresh stinging nettles together and thrash themselves to keep warm in the cold winter so a nettle patch w valuable resource. If you prefer to keep warm using modern methods now is a good time to dig up troublesome nettle roots in your garden that have been loosened by the winter frost. Nettle roots are notorious for re rooting in the compost heap - stop this happening by drowning the roots in a bucket of water. Leave the root/water mixture for at least a week until the roots have broken down to a muddy consistency. Drain off the water and add what's left to the compost heap or dig it into the vegetable patch as instant nitrogen goodness.

If you have space in your garden, please leave a little patch of nettles for the butterflies and ladybirds to enjoy and you never know if Mr Sarkosy provokes the power workers we may well have to revert to the old ways!

Reduce, reuse, re cycle paper- it's easy!

Paper is organic and breaks down when composted so why not put your old newspapers into your compost pile. Nearly all the black-and-white sections of newspapers are now printed using soy-based inks, so the threat of heavy-metal contamination no longer exists. Shred the paper first, then work it into the pile, remember that to work its magic the heap must be kept moist so don't add two much newspaper at a time. If you always shred your old bills and documents to prevent identity fraud use the shreddings between layers of weeds and grass clippings to stop the compost heap getting wet and slimy and your personal details will be completely obliterated. Line your compost bucket with a single sheet of newspaper and just add it to the heap with the kitchen scraps it will stop the potato peelings etc sticking to the side of the bucket making it easier to empty out the waste. Use newspaper as a weed barrier around young plants, cut a slit in the page and place the newspaper around the stem of the plant like a collar, use three or four layers and water each layer as you put it down to trap in the moisture. Cover the paper collar with some home made compost as a mulch and the weeds will be stifled and the plant roots kept moist. Lay newspaper several sheets thick down on your garden paths, and apply a thick layer of mulch on top. The newspaper will prevent weeds from sprouting and will slowly break down to add organic matter to the soil and you can enjoy walking over your least favorite celebrity or politician!

The Green Wizard

 In the Kitchen
The world's best veg shop can be found in Narbonne. It is called "Grand Frais". It has a mouthwateringly fresh range of food: fruit and veg, meat, fishy things and cheeses (limited) - lots of varieties I had never seen in my life before. Lettuces of all shapes and colours and so fresh that the stalks are still milky. Fresh lemon grass, some Chinese veg, fresh chillies, brown mushrooms, exotic fruit as well as normal ones and things like banana flowers. Maybe you know what one can do with them. And in winter they have the best quality Parsnips I have ever seen. I could go on but one has to go there to see it with ones own eyes. There is just no comparison in choice and definitely that 'just picked look' and all that at prices no supermarket can match.
The only thing I could find about them on the internet is there logo and a list of their shops across France. They have no website, they do no press relations...only seem to rely on word of mouth and that seems to work very well. Every time I go to Narbonne their car park and shop are very busy. Within 4 years, according to a minority owner of the company who recently sold their stake back to Grand Frais, the number of shops grew from 20 to 70 shops across France. There is hope one will be opened in Carcassonne one day in our life time.
In order to find the shop take the motorway A61 to Narbonne, then join the A9 towards Montpellier. You hardly are on the A9 when the first Narbonne exit comes up which leads to the veg paradise. After the page follow the sign for centre ville. At the next roundabout take the second "road" and you are on the car park of the Grand Frais. One can see the logo on the building just before one enters the roundabout. Enjoy  the shopping frenzy!
For people that do not take motorways "Espace de Liberté" is next door and they have a website with an access plan www.espaceliberte.com/plan.php

Hi Steve

Good to have you back

Your comment: "Whatever next some streaky rashers? "amused me.

I have streaky bacon and eggs most mornings. How??

Go to the charcuterie counter and ask for a dozen slices of  Poitrine Fume or Salée, and ask them to cut it on deux et demi and voila, streaky rashers.

If you like it a bit meatier have them cut it on three.

Do not buy the pre-packed type; the French cut it so thin you can see through it.

It's like what bacon used to be. Not that apology for bacon, which comes Denmark, and leaks all that white stuff as soon as it hits the pan.

Think kindly of me when you next enjoy your breakfast, or bacon sandwich with HP sauce.

Now what I want is a decent English type sausage for my sausage sandwitch.

Best regards Ed

Streaky bacon is available on the Leclerc deli counter.  It comes in the form of cured belly pork either smoked or unsmoked which you ask the assistant to cut for you into slices.  No 5 or 6 usually produces rashers about as thick as a matchstick rather than the 6mm gammon type slices which are their standard offering.

Does anyone know what has happened to the large jars of baked beans in tomato sauce that used to be available at Aldi Pont Rouge?

AUDELEC - English Speaking Electrician based near Carcassonne.

Word of mouth recommendations are, it is said, the best way to find a reliable English speaking tradesman; which is why I can thoroughly recommend Laurent Saillier from Audelec for all electrical work. Laurent came to my rescue when I was taken ill in 2006. I was happy to pass his name on to my existing clients then and the feedback from them was all positive. Laurent lives in Pennautier near Carcassonne and he works in a wide area. He is registered, insured, has good technical capabilities and staff resources to cope with your needs.

THE ARTS

Breaking news from France ……

Finally I have finished developing my website!  (Is that the sound of ceremonial trumpets that I hear?)  At this point, all the UCLAN lecturers will be thinking well at least she took something away from her degree!  This mammoth task (well mammoth for me because I’d much rather be working in my darkroom than at a computer screen) was finished just before Christmas.  This, of course meant that I could relax and enjoy Christmas & New Year with a glass of wine – or maybe it was 2 or 3!

If you would like to help me launch my career as an artist, please go to my website:  www.limage-art.com

and browse around the pages of the site.  Rumour has it that the more people that go to my website, and the more time that users spend on the site, helps to get my site get recognised by the search engine crawlers and gets the site higher-up in the rankings of Google, etc.

Please also tell your friends, family and work colleagues, etc. about my site.  If you have a database of names, it would be great if you could circulate the information.  It certainly is one way to get me out there into the market place.  Hopefully, the more people that look at my website will increase the chances that I might actually sell something.

And so with the completion of the portfolio and now the website, the ‘shop’ is open and ready to start taking orders – please feel free to be among the first people to buy!  (I bet you didn’t know that I was a hustler in my previous life, did you?)

Business will hopefully be boosted during 2008 as I have my first group exhibition here in France 12-13 April.  Although this is only a local exhibition, which I’m organising, at least it is a start.  I’m also about to make contact with galleries in my search for solo space for this year.

Best wishes for 2008.  I hope that it is happy, peaceful and successful for you all.

Daphne

An interesting read?

Sepulchre is the second novel by award winning author Kate Mosse.

Visit her web site to find out about her inspiration and the myths and

legends woven into this gripping time slip novel.

http://www.sepulchre.co.uk/

The Sunday Times described the book as bold, intriguing and passionate,

The Guardian complimented Kate on her historical accuracy, The Times

described Sepulchre as an ingenious adventure story. Sounds promising

but add the fact that you can visit Rennes les Baines and enjoy the spirit

of the place for yourself and it becomes compulsive reading – enjoy!

Writing from the Guts

A weekend exploring what it is you want to say
and how best to put it in writing

in the beautiful setting of the Château d’Arlens,
in the heart of Gascony

Everyone has a book inside. Daring to write is daring to say
what you want to say. In this workshop we’ll explore what is unique in each one of us and wants to come out into the world

We’ll help you find the source of your creativity;
to find the inspiration inside yourself and put it in words

During the weekend you will have a chance to explore your emotions,
play with them and create from them

This workshop is not about how to get published, or about creative writing techniques, but about harnessing the resources you already have inside yourself so that you can write what you want to write
