Bonjour Well finally a flyer, It would appear my computer knows when I am starting to prepare a new edition and decides to turn text yellow and double space all text. Hopefully all will be clear on your receipt. I am sorry if you recently submitted and an ad or text but I had to cut off adding things due to the repated computer problems and this document is already too large, I hope it doesnt give problems to receive it. Why do I do this, indeed a question I ask myself more and more frequently, well the idea is to run this as a small business with ads that are paid, and a website, both of which will attempt to serve the visitor and locals alike. At this point ads are free, any donations gratefully received If you wish to submit ads then please put all text and pictures in the body of an email (rather than as attachments) no formatting please and send to muttonbirds@easynet.com A word of warning to anyone who uses google autofill when booking a ryanaair ticket. It will overwrite the passenger name and put your name in, ok if you are traveling a disaster if you book for someone else, believe me I know!
Sting tickets I have blocked some tickets for this show on July 5 at the amphitheatre in the old cite Carcassonne , please note they are 68€ each should you want any please let me know
Another new route from Carcassonne to Shannon starting October 12th three times a week on Tuesday Friday and Sunday
Chickens and Austrians
The poor motorist who was killed on the M2 the morning we emigrated put all our little problems into perspective, but he added one little problem of his own. Because the M2 had to be closed, we arrived at Dover via the minor roads about five minutes before the Speedferry was due to leave. The people who did the signs at Dover must have been instructed to confuse and delay foreigners. Not for them such simple messages as Way In, or This way to the ferries. No suitable orifice presented itself, so my wife, Donna Quixote to my Sancho Panza, got out to ask a local the way. She reported back: We have to go round there, up a slope and look for a sign saying Carr Chickens.
Under severe pressure of time we spent about four seconds wondering about the chickens, and decided that, since Speedferry were a new company, and undercutting the others, they might well have been forced out of the main port and along the coast a bit, persuading a chicken farmer to give up some beach for the hydrofoils moorings. Off we went up the white cliffs, and spent ten minutes searching for the chicken farm. Since our ferry was now undoubtedly on its way to France, we gave up, and went sadly back to Dover. My wife went back to her informant. Not Chickens, Dear, Check-ins! Its round there! Oh dear.
This was not the dramatic flourish with which we had hoped say farewell to England, Home and Beauty, but we set off purposefully from Boulogne, only a few hours behind schedule. Quite soon Radio Four dissolved into hisses and crackles, and we were alone. There will be Test Match Special on the slopes of the Pyrenees, wont there ? I mean, long wave means it goes a long way, doesnt it?
We enjoyed the recently completed motorway via Cahors, and finally arrived at the gite. This had been chosen by me after I had stayed in it in the spring in my original journey of exploration to the Aude. The difficulty was, I am very easy going and rather uncritical of domestic details. Not so Donna Quixote. I had not noticed that the gite was fundamentally unfit for human habitation. I had no idea about cleanliness, the people owning the gite were grossly incompetent and undeserving of the rent, and we should leave immediately. Being translated, this meant that there was a fragment of toast still in the oven, and a piece of superannuated onion in the fridge. Since I had already paid the rent there was something of an impasse. The storm slowly abated, and soon every surface in the gite submitted, gleaming, to her authority. That evening we sat on the terrace watching the sun going down along the Pyrenees, making lengthening shadows in the neat rows of vines. With the help of avocadoes, cheese and wine we became friends again.
We started the search for a house. The estate agents were a mixed bunch, all quarrelling furiously with one another. Some of the worst ones were big advertisers in the French Property press. Attempts to follow up their adverts often led to ones being cornered in a café by a man in a pork pie hat trying hard to sell you something belonging to his cousin which we could renovate with the help of his uncle. This was why we had abandoned the fly down for the weekend approach in favour of setting sail with the house sold and the proceeds in our pocket.
Our house search had not been going long when we began to notice the Austrians. My memories of Austria centred round a drive through the Vienna rush hour with a temperature of 104º, and the mind-boggling cost of living. In 1969 we spent as much in a weekend in Vienna as we had in ten days in communist Czechoslovakia. Why therefore did all the Austrian tourists seem only to be able to afford small battered French cars? Where were the grand Mercedes, Audis and BMWs? Why, with all those Alps, did they choose to holiday among very small Pyrenean foothills, nosing timidly about sad provincial housing estates all day? And where were the leather trousers and feathered hats? We decided they must be unreconstructed Nazis searching for the Holy Grail and the treasure of the Visigoths, driving Peugeot 106s to avoid attracting unwanted attention. They failed in this as far as we were concerned, as their slow and erratic driving added to our difficulties in getting used to driving on the right. We often needed to follow Formula I estate agents leading us to new properties, and having to overtake the sluggish Austrians on the narrow roads. We became vehemently anti-Austrian in a short time.
We saw a lot of houses, and I thought about six of them were OK: pleasant buildings, within the budget and in convenient or scenic locations. Not so Donna Quixote. They were all crap. A pattern established itself. We tour the building making approving noises and discussing possible alterations. I mystify the owners with my French repartee. We part the best of friends, and as we drive away Donna Quixote speaks. It was crap. But there was a lovely view across the cemetery? Didnt you see the bathroom? Who puts a toilet in the middle of the room? It was crap.
We rejected the house in the valley because of the boars, and the house on the hill because we ran over a large green snake on the way out. We rejected the house with the green shutters and tearful, widowed mistress, because my proposal to build a decked terrace-cum-Bridge of Sighs over the gas tank was ridiculous. We rejected the Dutchmans new built house: although, as the notaire could see from our photographs, it palpably existed, the very reasonable price being asked for it was calculated on the basis (for tax purposes) that it did not.
We rejected the Beatle tribute band players house because it was next door to a meat factory, even though I had negotiated a substantial reduction for having once urinated next to John Lennon. The charming Swiss style house with a magnificent view of the Pyrenees was rejected as an ugly Teutonic structure and because you had to go through the bathroom to get into the garden, though this was admittedly not as bad as the little village terraced house on the road to the hippy colony, where you had to climb through the bathroom window to get on to the terrace. The world is not for sale shouted the hippy graffiti. Think again, hippies.
House No 39 was different. The day began unpromisingly with a lumpy journey up from the nearby town in the estate agents Peugeot 106. The estate agent, though not an Austrian, had reservations about the English putting the prices of property beyond the reach of the local French and the conversation was somewhat prickly. But then we swept into a gravelled, flower-tub-and-tree-lined oval in front of an imposing edifice. As the car engine died the air was filled with the sound of turtle doves. The sun shone on the lizards scurrying about the sandstone slabs of the sheltered, south facing terrace. We hardly needed to go in, as Donna Quixote decided to buy it four metres short of the front door. It was big and beautiful, and belonged to a French railway engineer. An anxious friend stuck an unravelled metal coathanger right through the crack in the metre thick west wall, but the locals all chorused Ce nest pas grave, and we took it. A man who builds TGVs will not live in a house which is falling down, we reasoned. The estate agent closed his eyes and thought of the commission. We had a house in France. And the Austrians? They turned out to be French learner drivers, who are obliged to show a red letter A for Apprenti where in England we should have an L for Learner. Sorry, Austrians. Hugh Nicklin |

Wineguru
Beware! It seems like the whole world is catching on to Languedoc wines. Decanter magazine has recently run a four page article on wines of the region and the Wine Society summer wine list has a picture of Chateau Queribus on the cover and an extended Languedoc section on offer. We need to be selfish and not tell anybody else about the gems on offer in our terroirs! Remember- 'Loose lips costs sips!'
Speaking of gems, it isn't often that my wife does the the wine buying but when she does she normally comes up with something good. Two such beauties are :-
Carte Or- Fitou 2003 vintage Leader Price under 4 euros This is a gutsy Fitou in the old style. Hints of garrigue and leather and 13.5% ABV make this a heady mouthful. It has been included in the Guide Hachette 2006 which speaks volumes for the wine. Chateau de Paraza - Minervois 2004 vintage Leader Price under 3 euros Not your usual style of Minervois this one! It is very jammy with soft red fruit flavours and just a hint of tannin. This is perfect for summer drinking with barbecued food or on its own. It goes down too easily so be warned! The new vintages of the Domaine Le Fort wines are now available so I will be reporting back on their pedigree next time. Happy slurping! |

Never heard of it ?
A very effective and non-invasive , holistic therapy .A session consists of a sequence of gentle moves over muscles and soft tissue, interspersed with periods of rest. It can be applied through light clothing
The practitioner uses thumbs and fingers on precise points on the body making rolling type moves which aim to stimulate energy into the muscles and soft tissue. During the treatment, the therapist will leave the room for short periods , allowing the client to rest while the body responds to the moves already performed and make subtle adjustments to initiate the healing process.
The Bowen Technique encourages re-alignement of the body. There is no manipulation of hard tissue and no force is used or needed. Treatment at regular intervals can help manage stress and encourage health maintenance. It also has a lymphatic drainage side effect.
It can help the quality of life for the terminally ill and relieve the symptom of infant colic.
It is very effective for back problems, headaches, sciatic, short leg, neck problem, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, asthma improvements in autism, palsy, good for pregnancy enhancement of sports performances and better recovery after sport injury

To Ex-Tablers
Are there any ex-Tablers out there who would be interested in forming an English speaking Aude 41 Club?
If so why dont you send me an e-mail edwarrener@wanadoo.fr

Dear Mr Hedges
The Aude Flyer is a wonderful reminder that i have to move permanently to my house near Limoux, and the sooner the better
However i wonder if your readers could help me with an insurance problem
My friendly neighbour, terribly apologetic, forgot to put the handbrake on and allowed his car (with no driver! -so no injury) to crash into my garage which being a detached sheet metal unit is a write off.
Eighten months of trying to haggle (lack of french versus business french) has got me an offer that will cover about half the cost of replacement
My refusal to accept such offer and a request to replace the garage at the insurers cost has been met by the gallic "Non".
I am therefore seeking an english speaking relevant local expert to give me some advice.
Any help from your readers as to a name and contact would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance

I would also like to know if there are any markets selling organic food in the area or if anyone knows a dentist qualified to remove mercury fillings. Once again many thanks for Aude Flyer and keep up the good work!! Emma Tikunova 04 68 60 38

Mobile Phones and Prélèvements (Direct debits)
For those of you who are thinking about buying a French mobile phone (SFR) and taking up a direct debit with a phone company then please read this cautionary tale before you decide:
My late husband bought an SFR phone and took out a two year contract for a monthly fee in February 2005. At the beginning of July 2005 he died.
I wrote letters and sent out 0ver 15 copies of death certificates and certificates of heredite to everyone who would need to know; from the Tax people UK and France, to EDF and SFR.
SFR did not reply but continued to send the normal monthly bill, and, I have to say I did use the phone in July and August: I imagined that they would send me instructions on what to do on a death, and send me a final bill.
By October I still hadnt received acknowledgement from SFR so I telephoned, wrote, and called into their shop in Carcassonne. They were aware of the situation but had done nothing. In November I received a letter of condolence plus an agreed date of cessation of contract, which was January 2006. Not being in any mood to argue the point that surely the contract should have ceased on his death, I agreed (after all I had used the phone for a few weeks after that date it seemed fair).
Then a letter arrived from SFR to my late husband asking for his RIB number (Bank details) and proof of his address. I wrote back reminding them of his death, informing them that his ashes were somewhere in the Mediterranean and that he no longer had a bank account.
After that I heard nothing till January when I received a bill for rental for January AND February 2006. I calculated the bill based on their agreed date of contract cessation in January and sent a cheque (for £20) with an explanation.
The cheque was returned to me by SFR with a letter stating that SFR had no facility to bank a cheque would I please send my late husbands RIB number. I replied, sending the cheque back, and stating (again) that the account no longer existed, and that if they could not bank a cheque unless they had a suitable solution I would treat the returned cheque as a gift.
Two weeks later the cheque was banked and appeared in my statement.
I heard nothing more from SFR, but this week my late husband received two threatening letters from a debt collecting agency wanting over 100 euros. I have returned the letters with my late husbands death certificate.
At the moment I still have the courage to fight the wrong but can anyone tell me what is the worst that can happen now, bearing in mind that the correspondence so far has been addressed to a deceased person?
I am very anxious about the whole thing as this is the third time I have been ripped off by (telephone and French satellite) companies who insist on prélèvements. They seem to be a legal way of stealing, and should be avoided at all costs.
| Dear
Steve,
I've been enjoying your Flyer for many months now - keep up the great work, it's very informative and helpful and I'll be putting a link on my website as suggested. I attach some information on my business which has been running for 3 years in the Béziers region and as I've just started up a second operation in Puivert which is more the area you cover, I thought it might be of interest to some of your readers. We can now offer our services in the following locations :- Limoux, Mirepoix, Quillan, Alet les Bains, Chalabra, Esperaza, Fa, Foix, Lavelanet, Lescale, Rivel, Ste Colombe sur l'Hers and generally up to 20 minutes south of Carcassonne. You will see from the Flyer that we provide a changeover service which includes pool cleaning, gardening and maintenance but also have begun to put properties for rent onto our website. I'd be grateful if you could put something in your next Flyer about us to help us on our way in your area. We will also be looking for more staff in the months to come so hopefully your Flyer might help us find some interested people. Many thanks, Juliana Forte ALLEZ LANGUEDOC |

First of all, congrats on your Aude flyer! It's brilliant! :)
I would very much like to exchange web links with you. We have a website on the Languedoc, which is also entirely in English. It is called:
www.languedocvakantie.nl Just click on the English flag to go straight through to the English translation.
Is it also possible to place this url on your next Aude flyer? I have free ads on my "Places to Stay" page for people who are renting out holiday homes or appartments. As you will see, the website is very informative on the whole region of the Languedoc.
Thanks very much!
Best wishes and lots of success on your flyer, I am promoting it all over the place.
Hope to hear from you soon!
Bye

Au Bon Pasteur Restaurant, Carcassonne
Last night we followed the recommendation of friends and went for dinner at a small restaurant, the Au Bon Pasteur, tucked away in Carcassonne's rue Antoine Armagnac - No 29. This street runs North from the North West corner of the central square, Place Carnot, and the restaurant is a short way up on the left before you come to the St Vincent church and the Best of British shop.
Six of us found our table prepared, chose from an interesting and varied menu, and all enjoyed a very good 3-course meal, with a jug of house wine which was also very good, for under Euro 100 for the six of us - c. Euro 16 each. We unanimously voted it a very good meal and excellent value for money. We thanked our friends for the recommendation and are happy to pass this on to others. They do lunches too and they will soon see us there for lunch after our morning's shopping.

And on a lighter note
You are driving in Languedoc
The car in front of you has had its left indicator on for the last ten kilometres, the driver behind you is trying his or her hardest to get into your boot and someone has just overtaken you on a blind bend narrowly missing oncoming traffic.
You begin to question your driving ability; concentrating more closely on your driving and that of others - and then wish you hadnt.
You come to a roundabout. The cars coming from your left are not giving you a clue as to where they intend to exit and then its your chance; a car has its right indicator on, it must be turning off the roundabout, you pull out only to find its not coming off before you. You try again; a car with its left indicator on. You wait. It turns off at the exit before you, the driver behind hoots at you for not going. What sort of madness is this??
You eventually get across and come to some traffic lights; not before the car behind you has just taken a leap into the unknown cutting you up as he squeezes into a non-existent gap in front of you, narrowly avoiding a head on crash.
At the traffic lights, you wait patiently for the green light. The lane to your left is for turning left only. You glance at the driver; they are on the phone! Green! You pull forward; the other car pulls straight across you and heads off in a cloud of diesel fumes, as you just avoid hitting the moped that has pulled past you with a deafening scream as it too heads off in a cloud of fumes.
At the next set of lights you turn right; its green. You brake hard as the pedestrian in the middle of the road shouts something unintelligible at you and points to the flashing triangle giving them right of way.
You make your way home very gingerly and pass a car parked on the grass verge not far from your house. The occupants are sitting there, with the sun frying them through the windscreen, drinking from a flask, admiring some imaginary view.
Its ok - its only the English.
