AUDE FLYER

Bonjour

Happy leap day, well as long as this flyer gets to you today,

It seems many of you haven't heard about the Limoux Carnaval, which is every weekend for some months finishing sometime in March this year, its well worth visiting if you haven't been particularly as we are having bright sunny days, and on the 9th of March there is le nuit de la Blanquette, the traditional ending involving yet more wine.

Some of you were here in Routier the night Rob Sawyer played, he has recently embarked on a tour around Australia by bike, mad fool!

I am planning so more little events on a bring and share finger food dinner basis this year.
If you would like to be informed when there are events planned email me with this link events.
I am looking at a stand up comedian I heard on radio 4 and possibly Hazel O'Connor, but who knows when or indeed if they will happen. But if interested I can keep you informed, is there anyone over Narvbonne way who would like to organise events with the same artiste when I have them here?

Hopefully you have the 15th of march in your diary for Toques et clocher in Limoux, a little more info on that in the next edition of the Flyer

No, no I wasn't out of the country, consulting in the matters of the music business, I was here in the Aude all the time. However I did pop back to the old country for 3 days between Flyers.

So nice to see a Polish food section at Tesco's, it made a lot more sense of the English foods on sale here, it kind of gives a different more understanding perspective of our need for some products for comfort or taste, or just knowing they are there.

I then went along to Marks and Spencer's, I ended up buying 3 pairs of trousers, more sort of Cargo pants really, those with 93 pockets, you know the ones. I have to have them as I am convinced rightly or wrongly that I need my passport and French chequebook with me at all times (the latter to pay driving fines) and various other documents including a recent EDF bill, anyway I paid and was presented with 2 free full size Gentleman's umbrellas, oh bugger! I had no idea what Ryanairs policy was on this item, but if I was capable of hijacking a plane with nail scissors then an umbrella seemed impossible, let alone two. I erred on the side of caution left them in London with family and on check in, I enquired what would have been the situation and was told that they would by all rights charge for them to be checked in "certainly not on the aircraft Sir" however this operatives normal action was to tag and send them to special handling at no charge.

Well you know now, and my advice is don't buy M&S pants with a free umbrella.

See you at the Mighty Diamonds show in Moulin Neuf in the Ariege tomorrow? Saturday 1st March

Hi, my name is Rob Hesketh, and I am a financial adviser. (Murmurs of discontent echo round the Aude!).  Cheer up; I could have been an estate agent.  Steve, our patron, mentor and guiding light, has, in his dash for commercialism, invited me to present a monthly financial "agony uncle" column for The Flyer.  Yes, a bit like that bloke from Barclay's in the paper; but we're a more select club, aren't we?

The more financially astute amongst us will have probably realised by now that there are two stages to this process: questions and answers.  This being the first time that many of you will have ever heard of me, there are of course no questions this week.  If there were, it would be fair to assume that "made them up." really rather not do that, so please feel free to throw anything at me (metaphorically speaking).

The more financially orientated the better, of course, but finance takes many forms, as anyone who has ever filled out a life insurance application will tell you.  Hot topics at the moment are the health service (a big financial headache for anyone who isn't yet in it, or who was, then wasn't, now may be); the Euro exchange rate (look on the bright side, pounds are getting cheaper every day); and inheritance (thought the problem had gone away, did you?).  Savings, now there's a topic  Huge.  Make your money work for you; don't leave it lying around in a tax-inefficient ISA in a foreign currency.  Yes, that's what sterling is.

Well, you know who I am (I told you at the star, remember?), and you know that I am a financial adviser.  You should also know that I have lived in the Aude since escaping from the world of international banking in 2003, and am now a partner with The Spectrum Group, a pan European team of financial advisers.  The largest financial advice brokerage in Europe to the English speaking expat market, we are registered and authorised in all countries that we work in, which in plain English means that if I mess up, you can complain to French authorities and they will actually do something about it.  Believe me, this is not always the case in the expat financial advice market.  You can find out more about Spectrum, and me, on our website www.spectrum-ifa.com

I don't see any reason why this column has to be a one-way street.  One of my clients has just asked me for information on Geothermie/Ground Source Heat Pump heating solutions.  Actually I know not all about this, so if anyone can help me out, I'll pass the information on.

You can e-mail me direct at rob.hesketh@spectrum-ifa.com , or send your mails direct to Steve if you prefer.  I look forward to hearing from you.

ROB

Technology

ADSL for all, no more you are to far from the exchange so you cant have it

For those who have currently no possibility to get traditional adsl, it seems an alternative will soon be available.

As of march 1st via Astra2Connect you should be able to subscribe for up to 1mb, I wont get to technical as I am no expert but its basically with a satellite dish and the send and receive signal go via the dish, and this system costs 399Euro for the kit and 99 Wuroto create the account.

The monthly subscriptions seem to be 20 Euro for 256kbps up to 45 Euro for 1024kbps, with a professional rate above that.

In France it's being marketed under the banner
experiences you have.

Kitchen

I finally managed to get to Grand Frais in Narbonne and its excellent, found a delicacy of some kind of a nut enrobed in Wasabe, well worth a visit if you are in the vicinity,

Thanks to Ariane for the tip, and I have found a Peking duck pancake supplier who should have them probably in a store in Toulouse within the next few weeks

Narbonne Sauce

I recently found some reference to a late18th century "keeping sauce" sold by many of the fashionable London luxury food retailers, so weel known there was no description

It appears to have been a "Rich Sauce" for use with savoury dishes? Anyone heard of it or can anyone shed any light on the recipe? May the sauce be with us

Wine

Hi Steve

Thank you for advertising the Fancy Dress Party in the last edition of the Flyer, there are still a few tickets left so just give me a call on 04 68 69 15 33.

I thought that you might be interested in this bit of news for the next Flyer.

There is a little gem of a shop on the N113 at Villepinte, on the Carcassonne side of the village. It is a one stop shop a la Esso garage shops in the UK but with much more style. The petrol and Diesel is competitively priced and the forecourt shop is a small version of a huit a huit but the magic is the wine and regional products that they also stock.

The enterprise was started in November 2006 by Jean-Philipe Bourrel, he is a vigneron from Cesseras in the Minervois whose Domaine is called Chateau de Fauzan and the shop is called Cave de Fauzan. It is well worth a visit – there is an abundance of wines of the area - Malepere, Cabardes Corbieres, Limoux, Vin de pays d'oc and of course Minervois.

The regional products include all sorts of tasty morsels, foie gras, pate, olives, olive oils, biscuits, preserves and much more.

If you want to treat yourself or are looking for a present they have all sorts of wine related gifts from glasses and bottle openers to a barrel to hide your 10 Liter wine box.

The staff will put together gift baskets with items of your choice and present them beautifully wrapped.

A recent addition to the shop is a superb boulangerie patisserie section with excellent breads and pastries supplied by M.Martinez from Saint Papoul.

The staff are helpful and knowledgeable and an extra bonus is Jean-Françoise who can speak some English. He is from the Girad wine making family of Alaigne and has a great knowledge of the local wines (and Rugby). I told JF that I was going to ask you to publicize the shop in the Flyer. So if any of your readers visit the shop just ask for JF and mention the Flyer they will have an instant friend! The shop is open every day 7am to 12.30 and 15.30 - 19.00.

Fuel 24/7 with a card when the shop is closed. This shop is a great place to learn about the local wine and try a couple before you buy.

Must go now I need to fill up the car!

Cheers for now Bill Nicholls-Ferran

Arts

Ma ville en poésie Narbonne, March
Three days of poetry on the streets! Part of an ambitious European project, Narbonne and the Dutch city of Leyde took this fine cultural initiative in 2006 during which poems are painted on street walls:

Les Murs de la Ville, by Reverdy, 14 Quai Dillon; L'âme des Poétes, by Charles Trenet, Place Salengro; and L'école des Beaux-Arts, by Jacques Prévert, Rue d'Aoste.

Readings by actors on the city buses turn poetry into an everyday activity

Garden

Free Greenhouse with every Gateaux purchased!

What will you sow your seeds in?

If you grow a lot, it can be expensive buying all the pots and containers to start them off.

Look around the house and you may be surprised how many things you can reuse and recycle in the garden.

Just make sure the containers are thoroughly clean and put drainage holes at the bottom.

The following can all be used:

The bottom of plastic milk or juice cartons (keep the tops to use as mini cloches ( adjust the ventilation with the screw top); old yogurt or crème fraiche pots; plastic microwave meal bowls;

Polystyrene drinks cups and food trays. Egg box trays are great for growing plug plantlets. toilet roll middles are good for any seedlings that produce long roots like sweet peas.

Flat plastic food containers with clear plastic lids like the takeaway plastic salad bowls from McDonalds and the cake boxes at Leclerc, can be used as propagators, keeping seeds warm and moist during germination so you can feel good about eating fast food and gateaux!

Home made compost is a great for your plants, great for the planet and it is free! There is a method available to suit most lifestyles so why not give it a go?

You can make compost in a bucket on your balcony if you don’t have a garden. Borrow a small amount of soil from a friend’s garden and pop it in the bottom of the bucket. The bacteria in the soil will manufacture your compost. Add tea bags, coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable scraps (better if you can cut them into small chunks to speed up the process). Add small loosely scrunched newspaper balls (golf ball size) to the mixture to absorb moisture and provide a home for the air loving bacteria. Keep your bucket loosely covered, (an old saucepan lid is good). If the mixture gets two wet mix in more newspaper or egg box type cardboard balls and the odd toilet roll middle, if it is dry add a little washing up water. Once the bucket is full leave the compost mixture to rot down for a couple of weeks and then top it up with fresh kitchen waste until the bucket remains about two thirds full. Leave for a couple of months and then use the beautiful crumbly compost to feed your plants. If you have a space in the garden for a compost heap the process is the same but on a bigger scale.

Making compost will make you and your plants feel good and it is a great subject for dinner party discussion!

Ps Dont forget to keep some compost in the bottom of your bucket to start off the next batch.

Travel

So the irrepressible Ryanair shut down their site for 3 days, seems to be a case of don't fix it, it aint broke. Not much fun now is it? Much harder to use and to compare prices for a period to choose the best time to fly. And from the horses mouth the Flyer has been told its not coming back that nice Find lowest fare button I mean. Apparently the new site was necessary for the increased numbers of routes. The current situation of looking at 3 days of flights and shuffling back and forth is not working as expected so we should see some improvement with that.

Has anyone heard more than a rumour of Ryanairs demands to Carcassonne airport, asking them to  install computerised landing aide or they stop flying here?

Jet2.com commence flying Toulouse to Edinburgh may 24th and they do have a find lowest fare button. They already fly Toulouse to Belfast and Leeds/Bradford

http://www.flycheapo.com/flights/toulouse a useful website that allows you  to check flight routes and airlines  to a chosen destination

If you were expecting to fly from Nimes to Spain Amsterdam or North Africa on Eurociel a joint venture between the airport and a ferry company, it appears it isn't

currently going to take off, certainly not before the summer anyway

Well this one caused some correspondence (maybe it was a hoax?)

WARNING It seems one is obliged to sign the back of the insurance document you display on your windscreen, penalty 180 Euro, has any experienced this being checked?

Or even fined? Thanks Jan for the tip, mine are now duly signed as I had heard nothing of this before.

Steve

this was in French news some time late last year, all you have to sign is the green insurance certificate NOT the back of the item on the screen

If you want it officially I will ask my insurance lady, who write for the LFN Digestive

have a good weekend

LFN

Re your TRAVEL/Insurance documents query:

Yes, I can witness that it can be checked, and fined, usually when they can't find anything else wrong and don't want to lose face, so DO sign.

URGENT! 3 beautiful cats need a home! Can you help?

Max (6 years old), Iggie and Bo (4 years old and brothers) are all neutered male cats, all orange.  Iggie is long-haired.

They've been living on a domain for 4 years and are used to being able to spend time outside.  In the winter they spend more time inside and they always eat inside.  Iggie decided last year that he wanted to be a frou-frou city cat and have a litter box so he now has one.

They need a home urgently.  For family reasons I can't be in France all the time and I can't just leave them here for months at a time.

They live happily with two dogs and the dogs and cats play with each other and nap together.  They really haven't spent time around children so it's probably best that they live with adults or older children.

Bo is quite shy and takes some time to feel comfortable with new people.  Max sometimes acts aloof but loves to cuddle.  Iggie would cuddle all the time if anyone was available.

Realistically they need to be able to go outside. Ideally they'll find a home somewhere with a large garden, or on the edge of a tiny village. It would be perfect if they could continue to live together.

If you know anyone who might be able to give them a home please send this on to them.  And if you can help please call  me at 0468 24 02 94 or e-mail me at aude.france@gmail.com

Thanks, Sam Mooney

Long lets required

Anglo-American (born and educated in the UK, 50-year career in Canada and the US) is looking for rentable furnished space in a quiet part of an attractive town in Languedoc-Roussillon. The plan is to spend at least eight months - May-December 2008 - perhaps longer, in peace and quiet, writing a book. Ideally the apartment or small house will be situated so that the absence of a car is not a problem, handy for post office and shops, but away from traffic. Ideally too there would be two rooms in addition to a bedroom, shower room and kitchen(ette.) Even more ideal would be a property like that renting for no more than 600 euros per month. (But for the exactly right space some more euros might be found.) Respond please to ps22@columbia.edu

Professional couple in there late forties with two small children are looking for home to rent for 6 months (start around June July) while we consider relocating to the area.... we would like to find a 3/4 bedrooms with some outside space in a community, preferably very French (if we are going to do this with young children we feel its best to go native!!!!!)Something close to Castelnaudary would be great maybe a holiday home, gite business you are selling?... I would be more than happy to show people round...any ideas, suggestions, all would be appreciated... also any info on local schools. or advice from others who have relocated with small children,  we would be grateful for all!...We would of course expect to pay for the rental, price depending on the property but to reflect a long rental period.  Email  juliea.prior@btinternet.com

VO films in Carcassonne

If anybody is interested in seeing films in English - VOSTF is "version originale sous titré Français (original language with subtitles in French), then email Claire at the Cap Cinema. The films are shown at the Colysée cinema near the rail station in Carcassonne. The new Cap cinema at Pont Rouge is well worth a visit too as there are several eateries on site, not forgetting the Crescendo restaurant at Intermarché which does the yummiest chocolate cake you'll (possibly) ever find!

You can ask to be put on the email list and you'll receive the programme each week, so that they have enough viewers to keep showing them. And please email the link to anyone you can think of.

British passport advise

Hi Steve

Thought perhaps the rest of the Brits out here might like to know that for renewal of a passport through the British Embassy in Paris, it is no longer possible to send a personal cheque to cover the cost. You are obliged to get a Cheque Mandat or a Cash Mandat. My bank did not know anything about a Cheque Mandat when I called them; however La Poste were able to issue a Cash Mandat.

Incidentally it is less than half price to renew your passport in England than to renew it in France, so if you still have an address in the UK, that is the way to proceed...

Kind regards

Jan

And now for something completely different

An American tourist in London decides to skip his tour group and explore the city on his own. He wanders around, seeing the sights, occasionally stopping at a quaint pub to soak up the local culture, chat with the locals, and have a pint of bitter.

After a while, he finds himself in a very nice neighborhood with big, stately residences. No pubs, no stores, no restaurants and, worst of all, no public restrooms.

However, after all those Guinness’s, he really has to go. He finds a narrow side street, with high walls surrounding the adjacent buildings and decides to use the wall to solve his problem.

As he is unzipping, he is tapped on the shoulder by a London bobby, who says, "Sir, you simply cannot do that here, you know."

"I'm very sorry, officer," replies the American, "but I really have to go, and I just can't find a public restroom."

"Ah, yes," said the bobby, "just follow me".

He leads the American through a back delivery alley to a gate, which he opens.

"In there," points the bobby, "whiz away sir, anywhere you like."

The fellow enters and finds himself in the most beautiful garden he has ever seen. Manicured grass lawns, statuary, fountains, sculptured hedges, and huge beds of gorgeous flowers, all in perfect bloom. Since he has the policeman's blessing, he relieves himself and feels much more comfortable.

As he goes back through the gate, he says to the bobby, "That was really decent of you. Is that what you call English hospitality?"

"No, sir." replied the bobby. "That is what we call the French Embassy."

Oh calm down its just meant to be funny!

So is this

"Life is a waste of time

Time is a waste of life

Get wasted all the time

And you'll have the time of your life"
