Aude & Ariege Flyer

The Flyer is a free newsletter; its purpose is to disperse information that may be of use to others. So many times I have picked up a newspaper in a café and found an article about an event that looked so good, only to realise it was yesterday. So why not forward info that others would find useful. I have added the Ariege because I often receive info for and from there

There is a lot of work involved in creating this, should you wish you can donate via Paypal or cheque to keep it free and growing in usefulness. (details at the end of flyer)

Bonjour

Well I have been aware a percentage of readers have holiday houses in the region, but I didn't realise the readership was so dispersed. Since the last flyer I have had correspondence from far and wide including Buenos Aires, Singapore, Alexandria and even Scotland. Seemingly the further away you are the more interested in the Flyer you are as it provides an invaluable link to your French Connection. And access to what's on when you are here for short visits.

Is Ban Ki-Moon as effective as DG of the UN as Gordon Brown is as Prime Minister of the UK, somewhat overshadowed by predecessors? Just shows what personality does for people in high office, having one seems essential.

Mr Mugabe still seems to be having trouble counting and I am not surprised as mazana mapfumbamwe nemakumi mapfumbamwe is 990 in Shona the language most widely spoken in Zimbabwe (after English).

Berlusconi arranges 300m Euro loan to Alitalia, which will last about the time a flight takes to go from Rome to Milan, is that subprime or what. Or is that a Malpensa?

Whilst on matters Italian I can just see me getting a job in France or Italy at the level of England Football team manager, well done Mr Capello, you do speak English now As you promised right? If he did I guess he wouldn't consider Wayne as Captain potential.

It seems the powers that be think The John Butler Trio is just not an expensive enough ticket for the Carcassonne fest, you will have to go to Marseilles, sorry.

One or two sugars in your Beaujolais Sir?

After the plant swap!

Thank you to all the Aude Flyers who came to the Plant Swap. It turned out to be a good call to change the time to the afternoon as we were all able enjoy a convivial couple of hours in the sun drinking tea and coffee, eating the non plant swaps, swapping plants and chatting about gardening and French life in general. The consensus was that the event should be repeated later in the year so I will be announcing the date very shortly to give more people the chance to get organized with suitable swaps during the autumn garden clear up. If you know gardeners who don't receive the Flyer please get them to subscribe or tell them about the proposed event. Flyers with green fingers or those aspiring to have green fingers please watch this space! Anyone want to do another one? Or join with a Flyer open garden day?

Finally the rescheduled Blues night is Friday 2nd May at domaine des etoiles

May 23rd Fraser Anderson + guest at domaine des etoiles

email with your phone number if you haven't attended an event here before for info,
email with names if you have previously attended, please remember these are private parties
with a tightly controlled admission, thanks

Dear Steve

We live on the edge of a large wood (or small forest?) For the last few years we have been giving all our attention to renovating our house. Now that is coming to an end and we have started to do things in our garden. We planted a few shrubs and some vegetables and we followed the Flyer gardening advice and built a compost heap. The plants grew and the compost heap did what it is supposed to do. As first time gardeners we were thrilled. Then one night we heard some noise from the direction of the garden but thought is was just the local cats having a disagreement.

The next morning we awoke to find our new garden in tatters. Our compost heap was destroyed and most of our greens gone. Our neighbors told us that it was probably wild boar foraging for food because of the cold wet weather we have had. Help! How do we stop this happening again?

If you haven't seen the tell tail footprints going across your land before you started gardening you probably aren't on a regular foraging route. The animals were probably lured to your garden by the smell of kitchen waste in your compost heap. To minimize this risk turn the heap every day it will speed up the composting process and get rid of the "attractive" smell. The aroma from an open dustbin is another invitation to dine so secure the top with a bungee cord to stop it being blown open in the wind.

There is not a lot you can do to stop a frightened animal from running across you garden but like all creatures when foraging wild boar will go for the easy option. They will naturally avoid anything which they may get tangled in so putting a plastic mesh sausage (crumple up some sweet pea type netting with mesh about 10 cm square - 4 inches in old money) secured with stakes a few inchesabove the ground around your boundary with the wood might work and plants will eventually grow through it so it won't look odd. This is a good temporary measure but the best thing is to grow a thick hedge and encourage lots of brambles to grow up through it but this of course takes some time. Use the sausage on the woodland side and plant hedging plants on the garden side.

If you want to go high tech motion sensors that activate bright lights and water sprays are another possibility but try the low tech stuff first.

Any more interesting dilemmas?

Aude Departmental Choir concerts  April/May  2008. Conductor  William Hedley.

Please note the dates and places for this year's programme of concerts. There should be somewhere near you and it would be good if you can support the choir that sings for you!

Quillan (Espace Cathare)  Tuesday 29th April  9pm

St Papoul (Abbey)  Wednesday  30th April  9pm

Narbonne (Theatre)  Friday 2nd May 7.30pm

Caunes (Abbey)  Friday 16th May  9pm

The main work is the Nelson Mass by Joseph Hayden. It will be accompanied by the Aude orchestra of mainly strings and trumpet. If you like The Creation then you will like this work too!

Why Nelson??  The Austrians liked Nelson as he kept beating Napoleon's fleet.

There is also a piece by the orchestra alone and then a very pleasing unaccompanied work for 2 choirs by Haydn's brother Michael Haydn.

Caritats, Medieval Festival

For two days Béziers will offer you a mixture of music, colour,  smells, festive processions, shows of every kind and good food and drink!

Its simple just click here Donate to Flyer  don't worry you don't even need a Paypal account

Thanks for the donations already received (in lieu of a subscription fee) still plenty of time for the rest of you, you wouldn't want me to go Geldof on you?

You can also donate by cheque payable to S Hedges, as some of you have indicated your concerns about internet fraud, no problem, cheques are fine, I wont be embarrassed, whatever you send will be an accolade and a boost for the work already put in, to what is hopefully and educating and informative missive.

Just to give you a clue, the average donation to date has been around 15 Euro
