Aude & Ariege Flyer

The Flyer is a free newsletter; its purpose is to disperse information that may be of use to others. So many times I have picked up a newspaper in a café and found an article about an event that looked so good, only to realise it was yesterday. So why not forward info that others would find useful. I have added the Ariege because I often receive info for and from there

There is a lot of work involved in creating this, should you wish you can donate via Paypal or cheque to keep it free and growing in usefulness. (details at the end of flyer)

Bonjour

Well things are getting harder out there it seems,

Fishermen on strike, queues at the petrol pumps, 100% increase in the price of crude oil in a year.
Speaking to a local farmer whose fertiliser costs have gone up from 350Euro in 2007 to 1000Euro this year something doesn't seem to add up. Maybe its time for the agricultural industry to return to horses and bullocks rather than there trusty Deere, renewable fuel and fertiliser in the bargain.

Wouldn't this also create employment? Maybe this thought was inspired by watching Michael Palin on his repeated trip round Eastern Europe.
Where in Northern Romania four legged transport was still a popular concept. I even suggested to my daughter, that, rather than passing her driving test and getting a car, we get a horse and cart. Parking and stabling could be a problem I suppose, it would make a bit of a sight pulling into Leclerc.

The Amish of Routier?

Could someone tell those striking fishermen of the error of burning tyres!!!
Nice to see these governments getting some windfall revenue off the fuel price hike,Not!

There are new inhabitants in this village and in my process of welcoming them I assisted at the Marie. The idea was for them to do whatever they needed,   registration etc. which in fact turned out to be one signature for their recycling box and it was all done. The actual point of bringing this up was that they are Scottish and when I found myself introducing them, I of course had to point this out. When I state my nationality I say I am English, I don't think I am stating I come from England, I am in my mind referring to GB or UK. Maybe its because we speak English. It must be jolly confusing for non Brits? In fact a French friend spent much of his life, in the belief that when he saw UK on the packaging of a product he thought it was produced in Ukraine- is that a Bernard Matthews Turkey Kiev-Made in UK-  I spy? oooh how confusing!!

The other evening I went into the garden and there appeared to be a series of bright, green led lights exactly the same as the on light of my Digibox.

It turned out to be Glow worms or Fireflies, Lampyris noctiluca, The flightless larviform females emit yellowish-green light from the translucent underside of their last three abdominal segments to attract the smaller males which are winged . The insect can regulate its light production by controlling the oxygen supply to the light emitting membranes containing luciferin. They are found in old-growth grassland, especially on chalk and limestone soils.

The predatory larvae feed for two or three years on slugs and snails which they inject with digestive fluid. They become adults from May to July, eating little and dying after reproducing. Courtesy Wikipedia

Quite an astounding thing, I am now trying to see if I can train them to line up along the sides of the garden paths!

Your continued donations are gratefully received, as a flyer every two weeks is pretty full on. I need more of your input with regards to events as I get out less than I used to.

What's the reason behind the disappearance of the Bread fete in Villarzel du Razes, politics and pain?

Genesis to tour with Peter Gabriel in 2010?

Where do you read your Flyer? Write and let me know; send a photo, maybe a prize for themost interesting.

All over the Aude (and Ariege!) little plumes of smoke are rising, freezers are packed with meat and grown men are happy to be seen wearing aprons in public !! yes its BBQ season!

Traditionally a tasty treat for carnivores there has been little to tempt omnivores let alone vegetarians to the grill. It's a sad fact that grilled vegetables are often blackened, bitter and unappealing. But it doesn't have to be this way because grilling is actually a great way to cook vegetables that enhances their naturally delicious flavors. The dry heat of the BBQ cooks food at high temperatures and as a result natural sugars caramelize (turn brown and change flavor) and more water is lost as it evaporates out of the food. This combination of water loss and caramelisation results in more intense flavors. To get perfect BBQ veg is just a matter of technique and as with so many things size does matter!

Forget the vegetable kebabs that look fab raw but they rarely taste good once cooked. The problem is the shape of the pieces, and the fact that they are packed together on a skewer. Go for large flat pieces of vegetable that are an even thickness throughout. Don't worry about presentation once they have been cooked these large pieces can always be cut into smaller shapes.

This slicing method works particularly well with the summer squashes and aubergines because their natural shape allows them to be cut into long slabs that are about 2cm (3/8-inch in old money) thick. Other vegetables are more difficult to prepare because they don't have a convenient shape and size to begin with, but with a bit of creativity they can be made grill friendly. Onions can be sliced and then skewered to keep the rings together as can fennel. Cut both ends off peppers and slit the side to give a flat cookable shape. Tomatoes and any vegetable with a high water content are better cooked whole.

Unlike meat vegetables do need a little oil to help them cook. A quick clean way to add oil is to put your prepared vegetable pieces in a large plastic bag with the necessary amount of oil and shake. Seasoning can also be added at this stage. Vegetables can be marinated like meat aubergines and courgettes are particularly good for this as they soak up flavors. Avoid marinades with sugar because it is prone to burning.

Place the prepared veg on the BBQ and grill until they have nice criss cross brown markings on both sides—then take them off the grill, place them in a pre warmed heavy bowl or pot and cover them tightly either with a lid or cling film so that no steam can escape, and leave them for 5-10 minutes. This way they finish cooking through in their own steam, so they don't get any browner or drier. Onions, fennel, peppers, tomatoes, aubergine and courgetts are especially succulent when cooked like this and children love the unusually sweet taste. Use any left over grilled veg in salads, omelets, sandwiches, put them on pizza or in pasta salads. Don't worry about portion control just cook lots!

Thought I'd communicate the French stolen chequebook experience. If this happens to you, ring 08 92 68 32 08 and have a RIB handy because the reasonably helpful person on the other end will want all the account numbers. This is a national service not specific to one bank, I got the number from Couiza gendarmerie as the Credit Agricole cunningly fail to mention it anywhere on their site or paperwork. I Shall bollock them. Thought it would be helpful to publish the number in the Flyer.

best wishes, Ed Castellan

Big Changes to the UK Satellite TV Systems.

The BBC launched their FreeSat system last week. It uses the same satellite as Sky so no need for any dish changes. you will be able to just 'plug it in' to an existing Sky Feed. The +'s are that there are no cards required and there should be a recording facility available without subscription.........the down side at the moment is less choice in  both tv channels and radio channels available but more are promised. ....and of course being limited to a FTA system with no chance of adding subscription channels later on !!!

Sky immmediately responded by adding More4 and E4 to the FTA channels and as mentioned before Channel4 is available FTA by adding it manually.

I am awaiting delivery of a BBC box to see how it performs and i will report back in a future flyer.the
