Aude & Ariege Flyer
The Flyer is a free newsletter; its purpose is to disperse information that may be of use to others. So many times I have picked up a newspaper in a café and found an article about an event that looked so good, only to realise it was yesterday. So why not forward info that others would find useful. I have added the Ariege because I often receive info for and from there
There is a lot of work involved in creating this, should you wish you can donate via Paypal or cheque to keep it free and growing in usefulness. (details at the end of flyer)

Please pass the Flyer on to others
Send items of information you are aware of, that could be useful to others. Please don’t assume I know about all events, send it in?!

Bonjour
In addition to compiling this Flyer I am also the proprietor of Gites and have some Chambre d'hotes rooms, I know at least 100 of you receiving this are in the same market, Email me and let me know if you are in the accommodation providing or booking business? I suggest a get together here to share woes, stories and ideas, maybe in September after the main summer rush? For example I would like to have more communication with the tourist attractions of the region, maybe to create out of season open days at some of them for us to be shown around. On numerous occasions I have been asked by guests, for example, about the Parc Australien in Carcassonne and have never felt the urge to visit but maybe if there were such a free admission "Aude flyer morning" with a cup of tea and a biscuit and some new people to meet would you go? I need your feedback, to progress the idea. Write now!?
Then there is the possibility of anyone in any business getting together to chat and discuss what they do? A business to business garden party? Let me know what you think please.
I must give some of the credit to Lorraine from Le Labyrinthe at Arzens for focusing some things that have been floating in my head for some time, ie the above ideas of get togethers
Le Labyrinthe is a very interesting new visitor location on the D119 between Carcassonne and Montreal, good for all the family, tourists or locals, a maze of vines, petting zoo, Wine museum, tastings and sales and a smart wine bar with tapas.
TIME TO BUILD AN ARK?
And still it rains. Was one of the by-products of global warming a southern France monsoon season? I certainly don't recall reading it.
I have been concentrating my attention until recently on drought resistant plants; they seem to be surviving currently without breathing apparatus or flippers.
But I have started investigating some rice paddies for some of the sloping parts of the garden as an alternative.
I don't wish to worry you but there seems to be a French Saint with the same influence on the weather as good old St Swithin
St Swithun's day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St Swithun's day if thou be fair
For forty days 'twill rain na mairÂ
Not a lot of people know where this myth (or not) comes from. Swithin was buried out of doors, rather than in his cathedral, apparently at his own request, so that the "sweet rain of heaven" could fall on his grave. In 971 it was decided to move his body to a new indoor shrine, and it is said that the ceremony was delayed by 40 days of torrential rain, a sign of Swithun's displeasure at the move.
Saint Medardus (French Médard; c. 470 - c. 545) was the bishop of Vermandois, his feast day is June 8 (that's this Sunday) it is believed whatever the weather on his feast day, it will continue for the forty days following. He can also be invoked for toothache!

In the rumour Moulin
Who are Ryanair are taking action against for the "illegal" strike of ground staff at Carcassonne airport?
What happened to the Irish bar in Carcassonne, did you hear of another one opening there?
Bricomarche opening in Limoux?
A new Café opening in La Redorte? Why did Crossroads close down, can events still be done in there, would any one like to discuss the idea of organising a date with Hazel o Connor or indeed other events?

Greetings once more from the Spectrum IFA Group. I have missed the last couple of editions of The Flyer owing to a trip back to the UK to visit family and friends. Sometimes it's hard to be away from the people and things that you love, and from time to time I worry about the wellbeing of my ex-local pub and Chinese and Indian takeaways!
This is the fifth Spectrum article, and I think it's about time we cut to the chase “ money! That's what we financial advisers are interested in after all, isn't it? Well maybe, maybe not. I must admit that I like my clients to be as rich as possible, but by that I mean that I like my clients to make the best of their own resources, however limited they may be.
There are things that every expatriate Brit down here in France should know. Here are some examples, which hopefully most of you will be aware of already:
ISAs and PEPs Very pass. Yes they were great assets when we were squirreling away funds in the UK. No, they are not tax-free in France, so they are about as much good as a high street instant access account. Don't tell me.
Offshore Offbeam. Hands up who's heard of the EU Savings Tax Directive.
French Residence and Wealth Tax I have clients, a married couple, who have lived here for eight years, own two homes in France worth over 2m, and honestly did not know that they were liable for wealth tax not only on their French assets, but on their worldwide assets. I also have clients who know full well that they are liable for this tax, but choose to ignore it. And the most interesting thing about this? The fisc isn't really all that bothered, because he is a very patient man. One day he'll get you, and the longer he waits, the more he will get.
There are lots more examples of things you just should know, and knowing them will save you money. Nearly all my conversations with clients who have investments or savings get round to the topic of Assurance Vie sooner rather than later. I love Assurance Vie. In fact I can blabber on for hours about it, but don't worry, I won't. But I will give you a couple of small tasters:
Did you know that if a married couple had invested in an Assurance Vie policy eight years ago, they could now be drawing out Euro 9200 of profit each year free of tax, and that the underlying investment element isn't taxed either?
And did you know that if you had started an Assurance Vie policy before you became French resident (take note all of you that have not yet declared yourselves resident), that you could leave as much money to whomsoever you choose in your Will, and they will not have to pay succession tax when you become "disparu"?
Ooh, I could go on for ages; I'd love to have the chance to explain more about the most tax-efficient thing in France since sliced baguette. Get those e-mails or phone calls going, and I won't be able to resist going into more detail in the coming weeks.
One final piece of information. Not earth-shattering I know, but I like it. I have launched a new website called www.france-financial.com . The idea here is to expand on various topics of financial interest, so watch out for more developments on this site in the near future. You can also see a photo of me, which could be enough to put you off contacting me, but it's a risk I'm going to take.

A postscript.
Since writing the above article I have just learnt that I have lost a client. Much more than that, I have lost a friend.  Paddy, Rest In Peace.

Sell it don't dump it! Your old tat can be someone else's must have item
Taking your unwanted belongings to a land fill site is an easy option (well relatively easy as long as you know where the tip is, what days it is open and you have your permit from the Marie.) No! no! come on now you know what I am getting at! Just throwing unwanted things away creates a problem for future generations and helps no one so why not book a space at the Routier Vide Grenier on the 19th July and sell your unwanted items, make a few euros and have a great day out. Like minded people will be there and you could snap up a few bargains of your own, English books, DVDs etc and there may even be a bacon sandwich with traditional condiments on offer (normally the problem is being trapped at a stand in the blazing sun or pouring rain) at least here you can get under cover occasionally and have direct access to toilets and a cup of tea
Has anyone got a coconut shy by the way?
Perhaps in future years it could turn into a truly international section within this villages vide grenier, with all nationalities using it for specialist sales? Books etc
It should be interesting for buyers and sellers alike
For details of how to book contact me by mail 2 Euro a metre payable to the fete committee
Would you like to exhibit a piece of your art in my barn for the day?
Please email if you are interested, there is space for aprox 20 pieces |

Hi Steve
You may wish to include this in the next Flyer. Even it's in been in it before it's worth a reminder with the cost of fuel these days.
On the odd occasion bureaucracy can work in our favour. By law, petrol stations have to notify the Government and keep up to date the prices charged for Petrol and Diesel. These prices are then published on a Government web site.
So if you want to avoid being ripped off you can find the best deals at:
http://www.prix-carburants.gouv.fr/
It's a site that's very easy to navigate.
All the best
Tony

1st English-speaking association forum
On a perfect sunny afternoon last Thursday, the elegant Hostellerie Saint-Alban at Nézignan-l'Evèque was host to the first Anglophone Association Forum in the South of France, and events got off to a great start.
Visitors, who were welcomed at the gates by a Scots piper, were able to wander through the charming gardens in a lively and friendly atmosphere, and to the scent of musk roses and flowering jasmine. More than four hundred and fifty visitors were present including seventeen sponsors, representatives from regional CDT, journalists and photographers, an excellent Anglophone choir, and a number of authors and librarians. Visitors had the opportunity of discovering the wide variety of associations which exist in the region, including patchwork, painting, language, as well as property, those for the League for Breast Feeding and an American Woman's group, while enjoying the chance to meet friends and make new acquaintances under the Midi sun.
Patrons of the event were the British Consul-General, Simon Taylor, and Philip Breeden the American Consul, both of whom kindly gave a speech to an interested and attentive audience, while a number of local wines and beers were offered throughout the afternoon, accompanied by Indian and
Reunion Island delicacies and delicious home-made cookies. Later in the afternoon the piper, to everyone's delight, played again.
Many thanks to all who participated in organising the event, including our hosts at the Hostellerie and their staff, and to two young volunteers, Ludovic and Oliver, for managing the steady queue of visitorswith charm and energy.
We look forward to seeing you all next year.
PS : the winner for a night with breakfast at the Hostellerie Saint Alban was Juanita Jauer-Steichen from the Leche League. www.saintalban.com |
