FLYER

December 2005

Next flyer January 12 submissions on or before January 7

Bonjour and seasonal greetings

So as we hurtle to another year end, I find myself reflecting on achievements of the year, well the flyer has grown in size and readership and hopefully is easier to receive and read. I have bought a car on ebay and a million other things have happened.

The most important though is to realise that even having been here over 4 years there is still so much to learn as I didn’t grow up here, there are those myriads of nuances that you only achieve over a long time. Stay positive and consider the glass half full or indeed in moderation keep it truly full, Routier wasn’t built in a day and don’t I know it.

Please also remember this is meant to be a journal of integration rather than a ghetto creating instrument, we are responsible for our own local integration into a society that seems awfully welcoming despite being somewhat isolated for centuries. Significant changes are happening all around us and will continue. Get involved, join the electoral register, know what’s going on locally, go to more local events, invite French neighbours and friends to more things you do. Cook more for them dispel the Chirac image of British cuisine

Oh and by the way I really need more of you to advise of local events and I have to repeat that it’s really impossible for me to deal with individual questions on where to get this, who to use for that etc,

December 10th Saturday 21.30 Rennes les Bains foyer

If you haven’t had the chance to see Michel Aubenas this is a good opportunity.

The evening will commence with the choir of Rennes les Bains, then Michel will do a set on his own, then he will be joined by his group – Mandela

Following all of that there will be a blues group from Toulouse who have the delightful name of the Happy Crabs

Around this time  I believe there will be a certain amount of frapping of the beouf, don’t worry it perfectly legal and I believe despite the translation being “hitting the beef” it is actually jamming!

All of that for the princely sum of 5€

There’s a bar and something to eat available also, make a night of it as long as you have the designated driver.

Parsnips- last call by the end of Monday 12 December. No specific email (marked PARSNIPS in subject) with amount required, no snips

Well what can I say, it seems most of you have overcome your need for a parsnip,

Or you have not noticed the deadline

Or you didn’t receive the last mail.

Or found other sources, if so that’s good. This is was meant purely as a self liquidating service and a bit of an event

I will still do a little gathering at 11am here in Routier next Saturday 17th December for people to collect parsnips, there are some mince pies available also.

So snacks and mulled wine at 11, see you here

Letter from a new Limouxine

The cold is creeping under the uninsulated door as I write. Must find the gaffer tape and seal up a few gaps. The worst one is from where the plumber bored a huge hole in the kitchen wall about the size of a side plate, I know this is to prevent us asphyxiating from gas fumes but it creates a howling gale around the ankle area and somewhat counters the effect of the central heating. The other morning I spent about two hours trying to re-discover the electric blanket which I had thrown with a smug ‘ha ha, be seeing you baby” into a deep cupboard at the onset of spring. This now seemed foolish, and when at last seeing the flex practically sobbed with relief…pathetic isn’t it…It was worth every second of the two hours search. The fact that I can crawl into a cocoon of secure warmth and pretend I am lying on a sun-kissed beach makes the discovery of electricity…quite good really.

Which reminds me. How did we survive before computers?? I was stranded the other day when our ‘Mac’ decided to not connect me to anything. I had wanted to find some information on the web about a certain British artist. Usually I sit there tutting slightly as google takes over… SIX SECONDS!  to bring forth 4 million entries about whatever it might be. A site for whippet jumpers, why was the kilt invented, how to make bouillabaisse etc etc. Nothing happened. I twiddled bits of cable ineptly, turned it all on and off and on again, and then suggested that the computer might like to visit the street via the window. Nothing happened. Luckily some friends came round for lunch, which saved my sanity, and, as Steve is a whiz computer person, prevented the sound of chunk of plastic hitting tarmac. Its amazing to listen to someone speaking an entirely different language, even though it is roughly based on English. “do you know if the Q63rd,ur\fireblot screezsrunger is in place at the moment” he said mildly. “Er..yes ..probably” I muttered. “well there’s a possible problem with the X35 caketoast yoppersplot No 3567”, he added darkly. “lets phone Mark” I suggested. They then had a phone conversation of which I understood about 9.3% Steve did some impressive stuff with the keypad, and…it all worked again. I can vaguely remember when a mad looking man came into our school with a piece of beige plastic about the size of a large rabbit hutch. The whole school were gathered around while the man demonstrated the ‘computer’ It was about the same time that ‘Alan’ the boy that always had everything, bought in his new ‘pocket calculator’ which had cost 25 pounds (in 1973) Things have changed….

I must say Limoux is looking charming on these crisp evenings. Huge ‘sapin’ in the square which was lolling drunkenly but has been put straight, and some very tasteful white and gold decorations in the side streets. I never was sure about last years darth Vader black flashing disco lights.

We have our own Christmas countdown machine in the house (Ezra). The first thing we hear in the morning is…. “Dad?” “blerr.. what”? “how many days is it till Christmas”?

“Umm, 17 I think”

Child’s response:

1/ Yeahhh, GREAT!!

2/ Does father Christmas exist?

3/ How does he get down the small pipe into the wood stove?

Parents when child is out of ear shot

1\”Argg it can’t only be 17 days..can it?”

2\ “ when did you say your mother is coming”?

3/” Argg..tree..cards…cakes…presents…time ..overdrafts…work..humbug…and peace on earth.

Ahh…winter…again. Time of silvery frosted branches, black tree silhouettes against breathtaking sunsets and….desperate searching for any piece of dry wood to build a fire with. We are mad. We own a wood. We have not managed to chop a single weedy tree down, and not stack a single log to dry over summer. Next year.

Ahh..winter…long health-promoting walks with… the dog. The dog has arrived at the time of year when she is suddenly incredibly interesting to the male dogs of Limoux. The long walks striding across frosty hilltops are at the moment a crazed dash around the streets trying to avoid the horrible pack of hounds, ranging from a huge black droopy eared thing to a small sad and woolly poodle. I have a special dog whacking stick, and we traverse the ‘place’ shouting va t’en, sod off and other mixed language expletives. I’m sure much to the amusement of the other town inhabitants. Yesterday when it rained continuously all day, the small sad poodle stood outside our door in a silent vigil…..

Well, better go and do item No 47 on the list of things to do. This is a depressing list at the moment it is not getting shorter. Sometimes in the morning I ‘refresh’ the list by writing it out anew, perhaps pathetically adding a couple of items that I did achieve by accident, and then ticking them off so the list looks active. Mark is not a list writer and eyes this activity with wry humour and derision. However I’m sure it’s a useful and sanity saving exercise. Where IS the list, “has anyone seen my list”??

New list.

No 1/ buy an exercise book that could serve as a list book, attach to table.

No2/ Find a pen and stop everyone else taking it.

No3/ Try not to look at list more than 5 times a day.

Byeee, Kate.

P.S If people want a small distraction from work, pre-Christmas prep etc, I have an exhibition of my paintings at the Office de Tourisme in Limoux. There until 18th Jan.

As you may have already worked out the Steve mentioned above was not me I have similar problems to kate with the computer!

Wineguru

We often get asked by friends who come and visit us is there any thing we miss about England and we always say the main things are family and friends.Well, we have just returned from a 10 day visit and I can now say the other important things we miss are New World wines and Marks and Spencer's crisps, crumpets etc. The wine shelves in Asda,Sainsburys and Vintage 2000 (owned by my mate Alfredo 'Tidy' Ordonez)were stuffed with wonderful wine treasures from Chile,Australia,South Africa etc. all at reasonable prices! It brings it home to you just how parochial the French are. But! imagine my surprise when we nipped into Leclerc in Limoux and found a corking Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon/Carmenere hiding amongst the Riojas and Italians.

Dona Domingo - Colchagua Valley 2004 Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon/Carmenere 13.5% ABV  @ 6.00 euros

This is a strapping wine made from 90 year old pre phylloxera vines. There is lots of sweet fruit and a firm backbone of integrated tannins which will help this wine keep for a few years yet if you can resist opening it. It is perfect for Xmas day as it is spicy and warming. It needs opening a couple of hours before drinking and needs to be at room temperature. Give it a try !

Happy Xmas slurping to one and all.

The Garden

Seasonal greetings to all you readers out there. Winter is a time, when you can reflect on the things for the future. Which means projects like garden design, paving and new planting. But also there are things now, that need taking care of.

Pruning, hedge cutting jobs. Make the effort now, to protect  your frost tender palms and shrubs now, as we will all have better things, to do by the end of the month.

Pet sitter/kennels required in the Perpignan/ Carcassonne/Narbonne region

Hello,

My mummy and daddy need to go back to England for a few days here and there and as I am costing them such a lot of money to go back with them, I need to find someone to look after me. This wouldn't be very often and I would bring my own food and toys with me and even pay you for looking after me. If you wanted, you could come and stay with me in Leucate Plage (which is just north of Perpignan) and we could have long walks on the beach and I can also swim in the sea...its too cold for you human lot as you haven't got any fur!

I have to add that I am a daft female, 4 year old, chocolate labrador. I am fully house trained and love playing with children too. So someone please pet sit me or find me a kennels, as my owners collection of 80's classic music is driving me nuts! I can travel quite a distance to be looked after, so if you're not in the immediate area but would like to look after me, please contact my parents.

Woof! Woof!

My owners names are Jo and David. 0468406586

My name is Claudia Navarro and I’m a licensed psychology therapist from California with a Masters

Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. Since establishing my residence in Fabrezan six months ago,

I have launched a therapy service for the English speaking community in the Aude region.

I’ve discovered over the past six months a great demand for my services and very few qualified

therapists able to understand the unique transitional needs of the expatriate community and speak competent

English. I have practiced both in Northern California and my native Colombia, so I can accommodate

Spanish-speaking clients as well.

I would appreciate any assistance you could provide through your publication/website to publicize my service.

I believe it can serve a critical need for people seeking to come to terms with radical lifestyle changes and adjustments

to their family structure.

My rate is a very reasonable 30 Euros per hour, significantly less than what I charged back in the

United States. I can also conduct on-site visits with a transportation fee charged separately.

If you have any questions regarding my services, please contact me by telephone at 04.68327657.

Old car needs transportation from Wiltshire to Aude.

Car is not drivable. Anyone coming with an empty trailer, I will pay fuel and ferry costs.

Do you miss the fun and laughter of a traditional British Pantomime?  Then come along to the Theatre Musical de Pibrac in January and enjoy a fantastic, fun-filled performance by the SPS.

What is the SPS?    In the early eighties a group of ex-pats got together and decided that it was a shame that their children were missing out on one of the great British traditions of the festive season – PANTOMIME.  They decided to meet secretly for rehearsals and surprise everybody by putting together a performance, hence the name “Secret Panto Society”.

This first performance took place in 1984 with a production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.  Several of the founding members are still to be found treading the boards, building scenery, making costumes and working back-stage each year.  Of the original children in the audience, many have performed over the years and the Society continues to exist to this day albeit with an ever changing, multi-nationality membership.  It is said that “from small acorns large oak trees grow”, and so it is with the SPS who now put on six shows in the Theatre Musical de Pibrac every January.

What Is Pantomime Anyway?    In the British theatre, pantomime is a Christmas or New Year entertainment. Its origins can be traced back to the 16th and 17th century and it has retained elements from the harlequin and burlesque spectacles such as having an actress playing the part of the principal boy whilst the dame is always played by a man – yes really!

Many of the plots are based on classic stories like Puss in Boots, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Red Riding Hood. An element of slapstick is essential as are the inclusion of popular songs, topical humor and satire.  Stories always have goodies and baddies and a few intellectually challenged characters.  Audience participation is an absolute must – OH YES IT IS!  Honestly, you and your kids can shout out to your hearts’ content and feel that you are part of the show.  Some of the comedy routines have become traditional and are eagerly awaited by audiences who know them just as well as do the performers.

Nowadays, people may try to tell you that panto is for children. Then they'll attempt to emasculate the script, commenting that the baddies are frightening, witches are unchristian and the jokes are too naughty. Rumour has it that one group even produced, 'Snow White and the Seven Persons of Diminished Stature'! Well, pantomime has never been politically correct. Instead, it brings us face to face with our greed, prejudice, cowardice and dishonesty, and forces us to laugh at ourselves.

In the end though, virtue is rewarded, true love conquers evil and everyone lives happily ever after.

What’s this year’s Panto?    This year’s panto is to be Red Riding Hood, based on a text by Norman Robbins.  For those of you who are not familiar with the story or have perhaps forgotten it here is a summary.  It may not be quite as you remember, but that’s panto!

Once upon a time, there was a young girl so pretty and sweet that everybody loved her.  One day, her grandmother gave her a red hooded cloak.  She wore it every day so she was named after it.  But unfortunately, her life became difficult…  Separated from her true love, she risked losing her home…  On top of that, a wicked wolf was chasing her!  Come visit the world of Red Riding Hood in a show filled with laughter, music and romance.  Can Red Riding Hood find happiness and true love again?  We shall see…

This is a show for people of all ages, you don’t need to borrow the neighbours’ kids to justify coming along!

Performances for 2006 will take place at the Theatre Musical de Pibrac on:

Saturday 21st January at 15h00 and 20h30

Sunday 22nd January at 15h00

Friday 27th January at 20h30

Saturday 28th January at 15h00 and 20h30

Tickets can be bought from The Theatre box office or on line – Tel. 05 61 07 12 11 – www.tmp-pibrac.com

Tickets are reasonable though at €15 for adults, €13.50 for students and unemployed and only €7 for children under 14 years.

Some local eateries and your views

Hi Steve, just read the flyer and noted with interest the mention of the

little bistro in Esperaza. I have eaten there twice and can highly recommend

it if you don't need flash menus and plush surroundings, it has a lovely

atmospere and Fernando is highly attentive. Last weekend we tried the pork

cutlettes, beautifully cooked and presented, delicious! Seems a shame it's

not better attended, though to be honest, it IS tiny! I'll find out his

number and pass the it on to the Flyer.
