English Speaking Women's Group

A casual social group of English speaking women of any nationality are welcome to join this group.  At present we have English, French, Swiss and Dutch members.  Amongst other events, we have a monthly get together in a restaurant, normally in or around Mirepoix as most of our members can reach the town within an hour.  We have a subsection at the moment of an English Book club and would welcome more members in the area.  This is not the Women's Institute and there are no formal ceremonies involved!  Purely fun! 

 You don't have to live in any particular department, we have ladies from the Ariege, Aude & Haute Garonne.

DOWN TO EARTH – SAFELY

Flying is the safest form of transport, but most people still prefer ‘terra firma’ to being airborne. Likewise the ‘ground’ is the safest place for dangerous electrical currents that can result from faulty electrical appliances or defective wiring. In the UK the electricity supplier does generally provide each customer with an earth connection together with the power supply to each property – for safety. Not however in France, where each householder must provide and maintain their own connection to the earth. The importance of establishing and maintaining an adequate electrical earth cannot be overstated because it is a key safety feature of a modern electrical wiring system.

 In France an electrical earth connection typically comprises of a special rod driven into the soil, or a special heavy gauge wire buried directly into the ground, several metres in length. Either type is connected to the distribution box, and thence to the various power, heating and lighting fixtures via the circuit cables. So if you have all of these safety features in your installation then it should be OK to assume that you are safe and sound.

Not so because around 1 in 10 dwellings do not have effective earth connections. The reasons for this are typically corrosion, soil levels altered by building work, rod not installed deep enough to cope with dry soil in summer or ground freezing in winter – or even no rod at all!

 If your earth is not effective then electrical fault current will find another way to earth, even if this is through the human body! A visual inspection is not enough to check the effectiveness of an earth and likewise pressing the test button on a trip device does not test the earth in the ground. If there is any doubt an earth connection should be measured against French electrical norms by a qualified electrician using purpose made modern instruments.
