Next flyer December 12 submissions on or before December 7
Next flyer December 12 submissions on or before December 7 Bonjour Well we are all hopefully settling into pullovers and coats, forgetting completely the idea of balmy outdoor dinners, here at Domaine des Etoiles; things have been a little hectic.
Parsnips Its heading to that time where people are fretting over the parsnip shortage in this part of the world. Despite it taking until March of this to stop being called Mr Parsnip, I am planning again to bring some over. Probably a little more than the 82kgs of the ivory legume than last year. I am at an early stage of planning but I expect them to be no more than 2.20€ a kilo. As last year we will have a gathering here in Routier, most likely December 17th for those further afield maybe you could collect for a group of people in your area? I may as last year bring in some other items, mince pies, crackers Please advise your requirements before December 8th on a separate email only for this, with parsnips as the subject

On October 14, I and many of you had the pleasure of interrupting Kate Mosse’s world promotional tour of Labyrinth, the highly successful novel based in ancient and modern Carcassonne. I went through apoplexy waiting nervously for UPS to deliver the books for signing; they turned up finally 20 mins before Mrs Mosse. It appeared that those of you were there and Kate connected and all had a great time. The Zand’art gallery was perfect as were the hosts Zanda and Ann, and with the Zanda cd playing in the background, 25% of those there decided to purchase “le temps de rien” his most recent album.
Are there any Gites Chambre d’hotes, restaurant etc proprietors who would like to stock the paperback edition of this book with a display stand to sell on to your guests? I would imagine there wouldn’t be a lot in it maybe buy at 7€ and sell at 10€. It may be of interest, certainly to your visitors. Please let me know if you are interested on a separate email with labyrinth as the title. |

Zanda and Michel Aubenas at domaine des étoiles
A week after the book event an excellent evening was had by all here. Everybody having turned up with food and drink they were in for a fine evening. Michel opened the event singing a mix of songs including “What a wonderful world”, look away and you easily have thought Satchmo had turned up. After a break to consume some of the comestibles Zanda came on and provided such a wonderful set of songs in his own franco-catalan style, this was closely followed by more eating and drinking then the musicians who had played with Zanda returned to perform alone. This was a set of standards but with an edge that made the evening finish on exactly the right high note. They were also joined by Michel Aubenas on some songs; these impromptu renditions doubled the power

Well here we are again at the time of mossy smelling mushrooms plucked from misty woodlands, falling leaves, and a slight feeling of panic in our household that we never did sort out leaks in the roof etc while the we had the chance. Have just returned from 10 days on the small grey rock. Christmas was in full swing in John Lewis and nearly everywhere else, hoorah to return here to find only a small nod in the direction of the red clad being, and everyone far more interested in how many cepes they had found at the weekend…long may it continue. Spent many hours on trains, and spent a huge amount on fares. One journey from Southampton to Derby cost 89.00 pounds…..there were no seats, so we spent the whole time sitting outside the loo along with about 30 other people. I read Charlie and the Chocolate factory to Ezra (and everyone else) for about four hours. It was quite jovial in a ‘we’re all in together’/war time comradish sort of a way, but I think for that sort of money one should have a least be able to sit down as the train designers intended, not breath in unmentionable smells and have your hands remodelled by peoples feet every few minutes. Support S.N.C.F.! lets hope the French train system stays in one piece… Jamie Oliver is still rampant on the T.V screens and there seemed to be an awful lot of water everywhere, but I did enjoy going to T.K.Maxx (Huge shop full of ace bargains, if you have never been in one) we always find great clothes for Mark in there, jumpers with impossibly long arms, which have been rejected from rather excellent fashion houses etc…Also had a good trawl through all the charity shops, which is one thing I really miss here, and found some brilliant additions to our rather kitch vinyl collection…double album of Klaus Vunderlick for 49p, Abba, Julio Inglesias etc etc… Anyway, back to mossy mushrooms etc. Delighted to be back, even with the sight of the in-tray impending avalanche, and am amazed to see that actually not many leaves are falling despite it being November .However several people have told me darkly that it is going to be ‘an arctic winter’…plan your stews now… Hope you who live in or near Limoux have noticed the dog poo bins…ENFIN, they came, sprouting like so many green mushrooms overnight, definite decrease in faeces…and apparently there is an 11 euro fine if you do not ramass the doggy dirt!!! Why 11 euros….? Anyway it seems to be working and it makes a change to look at the architectural features of the town rather than the pavements all the time. Well that’s it for this time as Steve has a deadline to get the flyer out. Salut, Kate. |
So here we are, summer has gone winter is on the way, Christmas will be here soon (lots of spending!)What we need is a bargain!
Here it is. Domaine Lalande Galetis Rivoire can be found on the RN113 between Pezens and Carcassonne Leclerc (on the right hand side before you get to Pennautier.Drive in past the stainless steel tanks and park in the big open area at the end. Go to the bureau in the old chateau and ask for a tasting. They have a single varietal marsanne for 2.50 euros a bottle which is spot on or as my mate Alfredo Ordonez says 'tidy’. They also have MAGNUMS of an excellent unoaked chardonnay for 3.00 euros. Silly price. And as it is from the 2001 vintage it has a bit of bottle age to boot. We tried a merlot and a cabernet sauvignon which were also very cheap but i thought they were a bit stalky, but what the hell try them it is free! I am off now to go and buy more of the above before you lot nick it all. |

The garden Autumn dans le Jardin As the leaves change and glorious sunny days end in golden evenings, the garden is recovering from the heat of summer. Right now is a great time to be working on new garden features or pruning trees shrubs and hedges, you may even end up with some wood worth storing for the fire. Its ideal for new plants allowing them a long time to establish and make good strong growth next year. All the shops have a large selection of bulbs available to get some extra colour into the garden this coming spring . If you are shopping for trees and shrubs see if you can find the plants you want " bare root " they are cheaper and often larger than the normal pot grown ones. All lawns need care attention at this time of year, any repairs or new lawns started from seed will flourish. If your soil has been hard and cracked all summer then no doubt it will be wet and sticky all winter ! Take this opportunity to work on your boarders I recommend adding a good manure or possibly even Lime to improve clay soils. Don’t miss the chance to be out of doors at this time of year Jon Barton 04 68 31 35 53

For sale or wanted I'm in the process of cleaning out closets and drawers in preparation for new closets etc... the last of our remodelling efforts.
Anyway, I've got a pile of clothes; dresses, suits, blouses etc... all brought over from the States and all really out of use for me. So I thought I'd send a note around in case anyone wanted some nice work clothes. These are mostly tailored "day job" clothes, bought when I was working in New York and had money...heeeheee. Most are in excellent condition, and need a dry clean at most. I'm so out of that game nowadays and it's shame to see them getting covered in plaster dust when someone could really use them.
They're all roughly my size(s) over the past 10 years (I'll have to look up the conversions for the UK and Europe), but if you know them they run from 16-22. Shoot me an email if you're interested. Feel free to send this email around if you know someone who might make use of them. Lisa
PS: For those of you in the northern hinterlands of France - If you want them, I will send them by post Lisa M. Feay

Please give the Limoux English speaking church Carol service a plug in your excellent newssheet. Festivities are almost with us so it's time to celebrate Christmas and of course presentgiving time. Anyone fancying a mince pie and coffee etc is welcome to our second Christmas carol service. (But you'll have to wait until after the carols) The service last year was very well attended. We had well over 100 people and hope to beat that this Christmas. The service will be held in Limoux, 1930hrs at L'eglise Saint Augustin on Friday 16th December EVERYONE welcome The church is in Rue des Augustin just off the square, about 50 metres on the left (a small entrance and quite easy to miss) Happy Christmas to all your readers. We hope to see some of them (all would be good) at the service. Jenny & Mike Lang
CAROLS AT MIREPOIX December 18th 2005 5pm I am pleased to let you know about the planned Carol Service in Mirepoix Cathedral due to take place on December 18th at 5.0pm. The Bishop of Pamiers has invited Dr Ian Horsbrugh, who now resides near Mirepoix, to organise this Carol Service. (Ian, as many of you may remember, was Principal of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for many years.) First and foremost however Ian wishes to raise a choir to lead the singing on this occasion. I know that many of you, with years of English Choir/Carol experience, will wish to support Ian and offer your services for his choir. Perhaps this could be your opportunity to be in a Cathedral choir at last!! You will find the programme for this service set out below. For the most part all the carols are "old favourites". Ian will provide all the copies of the music required and of course, as a professional choirmaster, insists that rehearsals are attended dutifully so as to give a really good performance. The notice for the first rehearsal is quite short but I feel sure there will be a degree of tolerance with regard to attendance in this respect. In order to avoid too many odd letters direct to Ian perhaps you could let ME know as soon as possible that you would be willing to join his Choir. Please give me the dates of rehearsal you can definitely attend and the voice you sing so that I can pass on to him a fait (almost) acomplis, from this my concert list. I will then send you instructions as to where the rehearsals will be taking place. Namely, at his house, some 10 minutes on the Pamiers side of Mirepoix. Please feel free to invite your singing friends, not on my list, to join the choir as well and give me their details, including e-mail addresses. I will be sending out a further reminder of this event, so that you will not forget that it is taking place. You can then organise to bring along your friends, English, French or otherwise, to enjoy a Christmas carol service which most of us miss so terribly out here!!

Steve, you might want to include this information in your next issue of the Aude Flyer: We've found an excellent restaurant called Robert Rodriguez near the post office in Carcassonne and, given the limited number of good restaurants in this area, we wanted to pass the information along. It is a tiny restaurant and seats only about 20 to 25 people in two small, nicely decorated rooms. There is an 18 euro menu for lunch and a 28 or 40 euro menu for dinner (the 40 euro menu includes wine). We chose the 40 euro menu which started with escargot, followed by a roasted fish fillet, then duck and ending with strawberries with cream. I realize this sounds like a rather pedestrian French meal, but there is no way I can adequately describe the inventive preparation and presentation of these courses. Each course was accompanied by an excellent, well-chosen glass of wine. While the meal wasn't inexpensive, we felt it was good value. The restaurant is located at 39 rue Coste Reboulh and the phone number is 04.68.47.37.80.
Also, Steve, could I ask a big favor. Our computer died a horrible death a few weeks ago and we had to have the CPU replaced. As a result, we lost all of our old e-mail, including back issues to the Aude Flyer which I save because there is so much useful information in them. Is it possible for me to get back issues? I'm particularly interested in the September issue (I think!) that had some information about a French language program in Conques-sur-orbiel or near there. Any chance I could get that issue again? Or do you remember the website or phone number for that program? I've tried doing a web search for information but I haven't had any luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially since I know how busy you are putting together and publishing the Flyer each month. We really enjoy it and it makes us feel much more in touch with everything that is going on in the area. Keep up the good work!

Food Hi Steve, I thought I should write and let you and everybody on the Aude Flyer distribution list know about something interesting I came across last week. It is La Semaine de Gout. This is a week during which a number of restaurants (some of them Michelin starred) throughout France either, prepare a special menu or reduce the cost of one of their better menus. Now for the bad news – it ended last Sunday, October 16th. There is good news however and that is that it is a yearly event. Unfortunately I do not know the exact dates for next year but it will round this time of year. One of the restaurants taking part this year was La Barbacane at the Hotel de la Cite. They reduced their 160 euro menu to 80 euros for the week. This includes a seven course meal with wines to complement the food. Well, one could not forgo such an offer and sleep at night! For anybody who has not been to La Barbacane all I can advise is, GO, it is a wonderful experience. Everything from the ambiance to the food and wine is excellent and of a very high standard. The staff is welcoming and for those of us used to London restaurants the services is not rushed – one is allowed to enjoy and digest ones food. During La Semaine de Gout the reduction in cost means that the diner receives a surprise menu – there is no choice, it is the chef’s selection. Our menu consisted of such delights as prawns, scallops, sole, foie gras, seasonal wild mushrooms, pigeon and two rather excellent and delicious pudding courses. Even the canapés with our aperitifs were exceptional, no nuts and olives here (not that I have a problem with nuts and olives). I can not wait for next year and may even go a little further a field. For anybody who knows all about La Semaine de Gout and La Barbacane please forgive me for rabbiting on.
Dear Readers, I hope that you all enjoyed my 2 minutes of fame when I appeared on his series.I have to say although he was extremely nice when we were filming, I was looking forwards to it with some trepidation. I do feel though' that our region was treated very sympathetically apart from the Anjodi's Captains tirade about Noddy boats. Doesn't he realise that if there were no Noddy boats, as he calls them the canal du midi Would have been closed long ago? I was surprised that there are still a lot of people that were not aware of my shop. For everyone out there, I am called A Taste of Britain (Epicerie Britannique) and easy to find at Homps. I am open Tuesday -Friday 10.00 -12.30 and 14.30 - 18.00Saturdays and Sundays 10.00 - 12.30.My phone/fax number is 04 68 32 45 57 or 06 16 51 71 12. I now have a Christmas list so please pass by and order your Christmas goodies, or just pass by for a chat, I will alwaya be pleased to see you. Shirley Preston |

Please read and pass on, striking a blow against unfair trading giants Let's let them have it!
I asked how much, and she responded; "Only two fifty - it's a great deal!" I agreed to that, and told her to add it to my bill.
Thirty days later, I got my VISA statement, and the Neiman-Marcus charge was $285.00. I looked at it again, and I remembered I had only spent $9.95 for two sandwiches and about $20.00 for a scarf. At the bottom of the statement it said, "Cookie Recipe-$250.00".
That was outrageous!
"two hundred and fifty dollars" by any reasonable interpretation of the phrase. Neiman-Marcus refused to budge. They would not refund my money because, according to them;
"What the waitress told you is not our problem. You have already seen the recipe. We absolutely will not refund your money."
to the Better Business Bureau and the Texas Attorney General's office. I was basically told: Do what you want. Don't bother thinking of how you can get even, and don't bother trying to get any of your money back".
I said, OK, you've got my $250, and now I'm going to have $250 worth of fun I told her that I was going to see to it that every cookie lover in the world with an e-mail account gets a $250 cookie recipe from Neiman-Marcus. for free.
penny from this recipe! Bicarb (soda).
